The Akron Community Foundation’s board approved nearly $1.5 million in grants at its November meeting. Grants totaling $424,200 from the foundation’s Community Fund were awarded to 28 nonprofit organizations. The board also ratified 227 grants totaling $1.03 million from 69 designated, donor-advised and scholarship funds.

In recognition of the struggling economy, the board gave the majority of Community Fund grants to programs that provide for residents’ basic needs, including food, clothing, shelter, and primary and preventative health care. The board also funded programs that address neglect, abuse and other local health and human-services issues. Freedom House for Women, was awarded $15,000 to expand the Adult Supportive Services program.
